READING RECOVERY IS DAMAGING

'It was damaging': The campaign to rid schools of Reading Recovery

Lauren Williams noticed something wasn’t right when her son Tait started prep. He struggled to decipher simple words such as ‘the’, 'why' and ‘of’ in the readers he brought home from school.

“Every day was like groundhog day,” Ms Williams recalled. “We would try to teach him the word and then the next day there was no recollection of it.”

In grade 2, teachers also grew concerned and signed Tait up for Reading Recovery, a popular literacy program designed to help struggling students.

“It was damaging,” she said. “There was no reading to recover. He lacked the basic ability to put a three-letter word together.” Go to article>
