Literacy Statistics

Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) for 15 year olds

This is an international assessment of 15-year-olds’ ability to apply learning to real-life situations, which started in 2000. 72 countries were involved in the 2015 study, with 14530 Australian students participating.

39% of Australian students did not achieve the National Proficient Standard in reading literacy.


International Assessment of Adult Competencies, Australia 2011-2012

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has been involved in surveying adult literacy since 1996. The most recent survey found that 44% of adults lack the basic literacy skills required to cope with the complex demands of modern life. This means almost half on this country’s population can’t read at the level our society expects of them.
